No one wants to replace a furnace or air conditioner before they have to — it's a significant investment. But running an aging system past its useful life costs you more in repairs, energy bills, and comfort than replacing it would. Here are the seven signs we see most often when a system is truly done.
1. Your System Is 15–20+ Years Old
Furnaces typically last 15–20 years; air conditioners 12–15. If yours is in that range and showing any of the symptoms below, replacement is usually more cost-effective than continued repairs. Technology has improved dramatically — a new high-efficiency furnace can save 20–30% on heating costs compared to a model from 2010.
2. Repair Bills Are Adding Up
The rule of thumb: if a single repair costs more than 50% of a new system's price, or if you've had 3+ repairs in the past 2 years, it's time. You're paying to keep a dying system alive instead of investing in something reliable.
3. Uneven Temperatures Room to Room
If some rooms are too hot while others are too cold, your system may be losing the ability to distribute air properly. This can mean a failing blower motor, deteriorating ductwork, or a system that's simply too worn to maintain consistent output.
4. Rising Energy Bills (With No Obvious Cause)
If your gas or electric bill is climbing but your usage hasn't changed, your system is working harder to produce the same amount of heating or cooling. Efficiency naturally degrades with age, but a sharp increase signals something is wrong internally.
5. Unusual Noises
Banging, squealing, rattling, or grinding sounds aren't normal. A one-time clunk might be nothing, but persistent or worsening noises usually indicate bearing failure, a cracked heat exchanger, or loose internal components — all expensive fixes on old equipment.
6. The System Runs Constantly (Short Cycling)
Your furnace or AC should cycle on, run for 10–20 minutes, then shut off. If it's running almost continuously or turning on and off every few minutes (short cycling), the system can't maintain temperature efficiently. This accelerates wear on every component.
7. Your Home Has Dust, Humidity, or Air Quality Problems
Excessive dust, dry air in winter, or clammy humidity in summer often point to an HVAC system that's no longer controlling air quality properly. Modern systems include variable-speed blowers and better filtration that solve these problems.
