5 Signs Your Ductwork Needs Cleaning or Repair

Your ductwork is the circulatory system of your home — it carries heated and cooled air to every room. But because ducts are hidden behind walls and in attics, problems can go unnoticed for years. Here are five signs that your ducts need professional attention.

1. Visible Dust When the System Kicks On

If you see a puff of dust come out of your vents when the furnace or AC starts, that's accumulated debris being blown into your living space. A small amount of dust is normal over time, but visible clouds mean there's significant buildup inside the ducts. This is especially common in homes that have undergone renovation — drywall dust and construction debris get pulled into the return vents and settle throughout the system.

2. Musty or Stale Smells from Vents

A musty smell when the system runs usually means mold or mildew growing inside the ductwork. This happens when condensation forms inside ducts (common in Ohio's humid summers) and doesn't dry out. If the smell is more like burning dust, it could be years of accumulated dust on the heat exchanger — which is also a maintenance issue worth addressing.

Don't ignore strange smells. Mold spores circulating through your home can trigger allergies and respiratory issues. Learn more about indoor air quality.

3. Uneven Temperatures Between Rooms

If some rooms are always too hot or too cold while others are comfortable, the problem might be leaky or disconnected ductwork rather than your furnace or AC. Common culprits:

The Department of Energy estimates that typical duct systems lose 25–40% of the energy put out by the furnace or AC through leaks. Sealing and insulating ducts is one of the most cost-effective home improvements you can make.

4. Your Energy Bills Keep Climbing

If your gas or electric bill has been creeping up without a change in usage or rates, leaky ductwork could be the hidden cause. When conditioned air leaks into your attic or crawl space, your system runs longer to compensate — and you pay for heating or cooling space you don't use.

A duct leakage test (we use a duct blaster) measures exactly how much air your system is losing. Many Marion-area homes we test lose 20–30% of their airflow to leaks. Sealing those leaks typically pays for itself within 1–2 heating seasons. See also: ways to lower your heating bill.

5. You See Visible Damage or Pest Evidence

If you can see your ductwork (in a basement, utility room, or crawl space), look for:

Pest contamination is more than an air quality issue — rodent urine and droppings in ductwork pose real health risks. If you see evidence of pests, professional cleaning is strongly recommended.

What We Do About It

We offer duct inspection, duct leakage testing, professional cleaning, and sealing. For homes with severely deteriorated ductwork, we can design and install a new duct system that's properly sized, sealed, and insulated for your home's layout. If your whole system is aging, replacing both the equipment and ductwork together is often the most efficient approach.
